BBQ Smoked Salmon Recipe: How to Smoke Salmon


BBQ smoked salmon recipes done well produce a delicious array of savory to sweet smokey meats. Using your smoker for meats other than pork, beef and chicken really diversifies your BBQ game. Knowing how to smoke salmon adds diversity to your BBQ talents while also lightening up on the calories with significant health benefits.

Smoked Salmon has a lot of health benefits as a smoked meat. Sylvie Tremblay broke down some of the health benefits of Smoked Salmon:

“Smoked salmon, or lox, counts as a protein food under the USDA nutritional guidelines, and contributes towards the 5 to 6.5 ounce equivalents of protein foods you need daily. As a fatty fish, it also helps you consume your oil allowance for the day — between 5 and 7 teaspoons, according to the USDA. It also contains essential nutrients that benefit your health. Smoked salmon has some nutritional drawbacks, however, so it should be consumed in moderation as part of a healthy diet.”

Here’s a great recipe and video from Chef Jason Hill on how to smoke salmon at home on your grill or smoker. While he uses a pellet smoker you can adapt the recipe for your cooker.

To begin, make a dry brine for smoked salmon, which consists of dark brown sugar, a bit of salt, and some fresh cracked pepper. Smoke the salmon for around 2 hours, then brush with an apricot glaze or some honey. You can serve this as an appetizer with crackers and cream cheese.
